Structured Data Types for Business Websites: What Google Still Supports in 2026

Google keeps trimming the list of rich results. Before adding markup, check the type is still supported and that your page qualifies.

Structured data helps Google understand a page, and some types make a page eligible for rich results. But the supported list changes. Google removed the sitelinks search box in November 2024, phased out seven types in 2025, and stopped showing FAQ rich results on May 7, 2026.

This guide covers the types business sites ask about most, what Google requires for each, which features are gone, and how to audit markup without chasing features that no longer exist.

Short answer: In 2026 Google’s search gallery lists 25 structured data features, including Article, Breadcrumb, Event, Job posting, Course list, Local business, Organization, Product, Recipe, Review snippet, Software app and Video. FAQ rich results stopped appearing on May 7, 2026; the sitelinks search box, HowTo, Course info, Estimated salary, Claim review, Vehicle listing and several others are gone. There’s no rich result for Service schema. Add only markup that matches visible content, test it, and remove nothing in a panic: retired markup is harmless.

Key Takeaways

  • Check Google’s search gallery before adding a type.
  • FAQ rich results ended May 7, 2026.
  • Service schema has no Google rich result.
  • Each type has required properties and content rules.
  • Misleading markup can earn a structured data manual action.

What’s supported and what’s gone

Never a Google rich resultService, most generic schema.org types

Google said in November 2025 that it was phasing out lesser-used features and would remove support for those types in Search Console and its API from January 2026. Leaving old markup in place doesn’t cause errors or ranking problems; you can remove it when convenient.

Service schema: does it help?

Service isn’t in Google’s search gallery, so it can’t produce a rich result. It may still help describe what you offer to systems that read schema.org, but the bigger wins for service businesses are LocalBusiness or Organization markup and clear service pages (LocalBusiness markup, service page checklist).

Event

  • Use for real events people can attend, online or in person, with a name, start date and location.
  • Add the event’s own page; Google says events can also be eligible through ticketing sites that already participate.
  • Update or cancel status when plans change.
  • Don’t mark up coupons, business hours or multi-day sales as events.

Job posting

  • Required: datePosted, description, hiringOrganization, jobLocation, title.
  • Recommended: baseSalary (actual, not estimated), employmentType, validThrough, applicantLocationRequirements and jobLocationType for remote roles.
  • Use it only on pages describing a single job, never on job list pages.
  • Remove or expire filled jobs (past validThrough, a 404 or 410, or removing the markup); Google says leaving expired jobs up can lead to a manual action.
  • Google recommends its Indexing API for job URLs, plus a sitemap.

Course list

  • For real curricula with lessons or modules and an educational outcome, not single videos or general events.
  • Each Course needs a name and description (about 60 characters display).
  • Mark up at least three courses, with carousel (ItemList) markup on a summary page.
  • No prices or promotional phrases in course names.
  • Course info markup (detailed course instances) has been phased out; Course list remains.

Software app and recipe

  • SoftwareApplication requires name, offers.price (0 for free apps; add currency otherwise) and either aggregateRating or review; applicationCategory and operatingSystem are recommended.
  • Recipe suits food content with a real recipe on the page; restaurants and caterers usually don’t need it.

Schema plugins: what to look for

  • Outputs JSON-LD from the data already on the page, not separate hidden values.
  • Lets you disable types you don’t need and avoids duplicating markup your theme already outputs.
  • Supports the types in Google’s gallery that match your business.
  • Keeps up with Google’s changes (for example, stops promoting FAQ rich results).
  • Works with your SEO plugin rather than against it (choosing an SEO plugin).

Schema audit checklist

  1. List every template and the types it outputs (view source or a crawler).
  2. Remove duplicates from theme and plugins.
  3. Check each type against the search gallery and its required properties.
  4. Confirm every value matches visible content: prices, ratings, dates, addresses.
  5. Test sample URLs in the Rich Results Test.
  6. Review Search Console’s rich result reports and manual actions (rich result reports).

A “Structured data issue” manual action means Google found markup that misrepresents the page, such as fake reviews or hidden content. Fix or remove it on every affected page, then request reconsideration.

Frequently asked questions
