Rich Result Reports and Structured Data Errors in Search Console
Search Console shows which structured data Google found and what’s wrong with it. Here’s how to use it.
Search Console’s rich result reports show structured data found on your site and whether it’s valid. There’s a separate report for each supported type, under Enhancements (and under Shopping for product snippets and merchant listings).
Google notes the reports show a sample of items, not a complete list, and count items rather than pages.
Short answer: In Search Console, open the rich result report for the type you use. Invalid items have critical issues that stop them appearing as rich results; non-critical issues limit how they appear. Open each issue, inspect example URLs, fix the markup in your site’s templates, test with the Rich Results Test, then click Validate Fix. If rich results disappear, check for new errors, markup changes, manual actions and guideline issues; Google may also simply choose not to show them.
Key Takeaways
- Critical issues make items invalid; non-critical issues limit appearance.
- Reports show samples, counted by item, not page.
- Fix templates, not just one page.
- Validate fixes in the report after deploying.
- Rich results can disappear even with valid markup.
Reading the report
| Section | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Chart | Valid and invalid items over time |
| Why items are invalid | Critical issues preventing rich results |
| Improve item appearance | Non-critical issues |
| Issue details | First detected date, validation state, example URLs (up to 1,000 rows) |
Fixing errors
- Open the issue and note the property named.
- Inspect an example URL and view the detected structured data.
- Fix the template or plugin generating the markup.
- Test with the Rich Results Test.
- Deploy, then click Validate Fix in the report.
Rich results disappeared?
- New critical errors after a theme, plugin or template change.
- Markup removed or duplicated by an update.
- A structured data manual action (check the Manual actions report).
- Markup that doesn’t match visible content.
- Google choosing a different presentation for those searches.
For product markup specifically, see product schema for online stores.
Frequently asked questions
Why is a rich result report missing?
Google says a report appears only when it finds valid markup for a supported type on your property.
Why don’t the item totals match my page count?
Reports count items, not pages, and show a sample rather than every item.
Do non-critical issues stop rich results?
No, but fixing them can improve how results appear.
