Why WooCommerce needs specific SEO
Flexible Platform, More Ways to Go Wrong
WooCommerce runs on WordPress, so you control almost everything — permalinks, templates, plugins and hosting. That flexibility is powerful for SEO.
It also means more moving parts: overlapping plugins, filter URLs that multiply, duplicate structured data and performance that depends on hosting choices. We bring that under control.

WooCommerce SEO issues we fix most often
WooCommerce SEO problems usually come from configuration rather than the platform itself: filter and sort parameters creating many crawlable URLs, overlapping SEO plugins, duplicate product structured data, slow hosting, and category pages that are only a product grid.
1. Filter, sort and pagination URLs
Product filters (attributes, price ranges) and sorting options add URL parameters such as ?orderby=, ?min_price= or attribute filters. Combined, they can produce far more URLs than you have products. Google’s guidance on managing faceted navigation explains the options. We usually keep a small number of high-value filtered pages indexable as proper landing pages and stop the rest from being crawled.
2. Overlapping plugins
Two SEO plugins, or an SEO plugin plus a schema plugin plus WooCommerce’s own structured data, can output duplicate titles, canonicals or product markup. We consolidate to one source for each job and validate the result with Google’s Rich Results Test.
3. Category pages without content
Product category archives are often the best match for category searches. We add a short, useful introduction, better sub-category navigation and links to buying guides, while keeping products visible near the top of the page.
4. Performance
WooCommerce performance depends heavily on hosting, caching and how many plugins load on every page. We measure Core Web Vitals on product, category and cart templates, then address the biggest causes — usually hosting limits, uncached pages, oversized images and scripts loading where they aren’t needed.
5. Out-of-stock and discontinued products
WooCommerce can hide out-of-stock items from the catalog, but that doesn’t decide what should happen to the product URL. We set rules: keep temporarily unavailable products live with clear availability, redirect permanently discontinued products to a close replacement or category, and keep availability consistent in your product feed.
| Setting or component | Common problem | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Settings → Permalinks (product base) | Bases changed after launch without redirects | Keep stable bases; add redirects if they must change |
| Filter widgets / blocks | Thousands of crawlable parameter URLs | Index only valuable filtered pages; control the rest |
| SEO plugin | Two plugins active, or settings overlapping theme output | One SEO plugin, configured deliberately |
| Structured data | Duplicate or incomplete Product markup | One clean source; validate with Rich Results Test |
| Hosting & caching | Slow uncached product and category pages | Caching, image sizing, script control, better hosting if needed |
WooCommerce and Google Merchant Center
Many WooCommerce stores send products to Merchant Center through the official Google for WooCommerce plugin or a feed plugin. Disapprovals often trace back to the website rather than the feed: prices that differ after tax or shipping, availability that isn’t updated, missing identifiers, or missing return and contact information. We fix the source on the website so the feed stays correct.
How results are assessed
We report organic sessions and revenue for product and category pages, Search Console clicks and impressions for category and product queries, the number of indexed versus crawled-but-not-indexed URLs, Core Web Vitals for key templates and, where relevant, Merchant Center item status.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common questions.
Is WooCommerce good for SEO?
Yes. Because it runs on WordPress, you have full control over URLs, content and technical settings. Results depend on how well the store is configured and maintained.
Which SEO plugin should I use with WooCommerce?
Any of the established SEO plugins can work. What matters is using one, configuring it deliberately and avoiding overlapping features from other plugins or the theme.
Should I remove /product/ from my URLs?
Usually not. Changing permalink bases on an established store requires redirects and brings risk, with little SEO benefit. We only recommend it for new stores or strong reasons.
Why are my filter pages in Google?
Filter and sort parameters create crawlable URLs unless they’re controlled. We decide which filtered pages deserve to be indexed and handle the rest.
Do you change hosting?
We recommend it only when measurements show hosting is the main bottleneck, and we can work with your developer or host on the move.
Can you fix Google for WooCommerce product disapprovals?
Yes. We trace disapprovals to the website or product data, fix the source and help you request reviews where needed. Google makes the final decision.
