UTM Parameters: When to Use Them (and Never on Internal Links)
UTMs tell GA4 where a visit came from. Used carelessly, they fragment your data or create duplicate URLs.
Google Analytics says adding UTM campaign parameters to links lets you see which campaigns refer traffic in the Traffic acquisition report, and that you should always use utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign.
It also recommends a standardized naming scheme so traffic isn’t split or misclassified in channel groups.
Short answer: Use UTM parameters on links you place outside your site (emails, social posts, ads, QR codes, Business Profile website links) to identify the source, medium and campaign in GA4. Always set utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, keep values consistent and lowercase, and document them. Never use UTMs on internal links: they overwrite the visit’s real source and create duplicate URLs for crawlers.
Key Takeaways
- Always include source, medium and campaign.
- Use one consistent value per platform and channel.
- Use UTMs on external links you control.
- Never on internal links.
- Mediums affect GA4 channel grouping.
Parameters
| Parameter | Example | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | newsletter, facebook, gbp | Where the link was placed |
| utm_medium | email, social, organic | Type of channel |
| utm_campaign | spring_sale | The campaign |
| utm_content | header_button | Which link or creative |
| utm_term | paid keyword | Paid search term |
Good uses
- Email newsletters and automated emails.
- Social posts and bios.
- Google Business Profile website and booking links, to separate them from other organic traffic.
- Print and QR codes.
- Partner and affiliate links.
If you tag Business Profile links, choose a medium deliberately; GA4’s default channel rules depend on the medium value.
Avoid
- Internal links with UTMs: they start a new campaign attribution and create crawlable duplicates.
- Inconsistent spellings (Facebook vs facebook vs fb).
- Personal data in parameters.
Channel rules are explained in GA4 for SEO.
