Impressions Up but Clicks Down (or Clicks Down, Rankings Stable): Why
Clicks and impressions can move in different directions. The pattern tells you what changed.
Google’s guide to debugging traffic drops says that if impressions stay the same but clicks fall, your title and snippet may not be appealing enough, or other sites may have more appealing rich results.
There are other explanations too, and they’re quick to check in the Performance report.
Short answer: Impressions rising while clicks fall usually means your site is being shown for more searches, often broader or lower-position ones, that people click less, or that new search features (such as AI Overviews or other rich results) are taking attention. Clicks falling while average position holds often points to changes on the results page, less appealing titles or snippets, or lower demand. Compare by query, page, device and search appearance to find which.
Key Takeaways
- More impressions at lower positions can lower overall CTR.
- New search features can reduce clicks without ranking changes.
- Title and snippet appeal affects clicks at the same position.
- Check by query and device, not just site totals.
- Google’s own debugging guide covers this pattern.
Diagnose the pattern
| What you see | Likely cause | Check |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions up, clicks flat or down, position down | Showing for more, broader queries at lower positions | Queries tab: new queries with low positions |
| Clicks down, impressions and position steady | Results page changed, or snippet less appealing | Search the main queries; compare titles and features |
| Clicks down on mobile only | Mobile results layout or features changed | Devices tab |
| Clicks down for one page | Competitor result or title rewrite | Filter by page; check title shown in results |
| Clicks down everywhere, same time last year | Seasonality | 16-month view; Google Trends |
What to do
- Improve titles and descriptions where a page is a good match (high impressions, low CTR).
- Make sure the page offers what the new results feature can’t: depth, specifics, tools, local details.
- Track traffic from AI features within Organic Search in GA4 (GA4 for SEO).
- Focus on conversions from search, not clicks alone.
Frequently asked questions
Is rising impressions with falling CTR bad?
Not necessarily. It often means you’re appearing for more searches, some of which are less relevant or lower down.
Do AI Overviews reduce clicks?
They change the results page. Google includes AI feature data in the Performance report, so compare clicks by query over time.
Should I rewrite all my titles?
Only for pages where the match is good but CTR is low.
