Review Snippets (Star Ratings): Rules and Eligibility, Including Self-Serving Reviews
Many businesses add review markup to their own pages. Google says that isn’t eligible for stars.
Google’s review snippet documentation says it may show stars and summary information when it finds valid Review or AggregateRating markup on supported types, such as products, recipes, books, software apps and events.
It also says that when a business controls reviews about itself, its LocalBusiness or Organization pages aren’t eligible for star ratings, even if the reviews come from an embedded widget like Google or Facebook reviews.
Short answer: Review snippets (stars) can appear for supported types such as Product, Recipe, Book, Course, Event, Movie and Software App when markup follows Google’s rules: reviews are about a specific item, visible on the page, sourced from users, and not fake or undisclosed incentivized. Self-serving reviews aren’t eligible: a business marking up reviews about itself on its own LocalBusiness or Organization pages won’t get stars.

Google’s rules
- Mark up reviews about a specific item, not a list or category.
- Make review content visible on the page.
- Include an aggregate rating if you mark up multiple reviews.
- Don’t aggregate ratings from other websites.
- No fake reviews or incentivized reviews that aren’t clearly disclosed.
- For local businesses and organizations: ratings must come directly from users.
What service businesses can do instead
- Show genuine reviews on the page for visitors (without expecting stars).
- Build reviews on your Business Profile (getting more reviews).
- Use Organization or LocalBusiness markup for business details (LocalBusiness markup).
