E-commerce SEO Checklist: Crawling, Categories, Products and Data
Use it to plan a new store or audit an existing one. Each check links to Google’s guidance.
Google publishes a set of best-practice guides for e-commerce sites, covering site structure, URL design, structured data, product data and pagination. Most store SEO problems trace back to one of those areas.
This checklist puts them in the order to work through, from whether Google can find your products to how they appear in results.
Short answer: An e-commerce SEO checklist covers: every product reachable through category links (Google generally doesn’t use your search box); descriptive, stable URLs with one URL per product and variant; faceted navigation that doesn’t create endless crawlable URLs; useful category pages; product pages with unique descriptions, images and clear availability; product structured data and a Merchant Center feed; sensible handling of out-of-stock and discontinued products; and measurement of organic revenue.
Key Takeaways
- Link from menus to categories to every product you want indexed.
- Control faceted navigation so filters don’t create endless URLs.
- One URL per product and variant, with consistent canonicals, links and sitemaps.
- Add product structured data and a Merchant Center feed together.
- Plan what happens to out-of-stock and discontinued products.
1. Discovery and structure
- Menus link to categories, categories to subcategories, and subcategories to all products.
- Products aren’t only reachable through on-site search; Google generally doesn’t submit searches.
- Links use standard <a href> elements, not JavaScript click events.
- Best sellers are linked from the home page or other prominent pages.
- An XML sitemap or Merchant Center feed lists products links don’t reach.
2. URLs
- Descriptive URL paths (/product/black-t-shirt-with-white-collar rather than /product/3243).
- One URL per product; variants have their own URL by path or parameter.
- No session IDs or tracking parameters in internal links.
- Paginated pages each have a unique URL.
- The same URL used in links, sitemaps and canonical tags.
3. Faceted navigation and filters
Filters for color, size and price can create huge numbers of URLs. Decide which filtered views deserve indexing and block or limit the rest. See faceted navigation for e-commerce.
4. Category pages
Clear names, helpful intro copy where it adds something, links to all products and subcategories, and no empty categories left indexable. See category page SEO.
5. Product pages
Unique descriptions, quality images near the relevant text, price and availability visible, reviews where genuine. See product page SEO.
6. Product data
- Product structured data on product pages (product schema).
- A Merchant Center feed for free listings (what is Merchant Center).
- Return policy and shipping details provided.
7. Stock changes
Keep temporarily out-of-stock pages live with accurate availability, and redirect or retire discontinued products deliberately. See out-of-stock and discontinued products.
8. Technical health and measurement
- Page indexing report checked for product and category pages (indexing guide).
- Core Web Vitals reviewed for templates.
- Organic revenue tracked in GA4 (GA4 for SEO).
