Can You Opt Out of AI Overviews? nosnippet and Its Trade-offs

Google offers controls, but they affect how your pages appear in regular Search too.

Google says the same snippet controls that apply to Search also apply to its AI features. There’s no separate switch that removes a page from AI Overviews while keeping everything else the same.

That’s the trade-off to understand before changing anything.

Short answer: Google doesn’t offer a separate opt-out for AI Overviews and AI Mode. Its documented controls are the standard snippet controls: nosnippet (no snippet at all), data-nosnippet (exclude parts of a page), max-snippet (limit snippet length) and noindex (remove the page from Search). These also affect regular search results. Google-Extended controls use of content for Gemini training and grounding in other Google products, not AI features in Search.

Key Takeaways

  • There’s no AI Overviews-only opt-out.
  • nosnippet and max-snippet also limit your normal search snippets.
  • data-nosnippet lets you exclude specific parts of a page.
  • Google-Extended doesn’t affect Search inclusion or ranking.
  • Opting out can reduce visibility; weigh it against the risk you’re avoiding.

The controls and their effects

ControlWhat it doesTrade-off
nosnippetNo text snippet or preview for the pageNormal results also lose their snippet
data-nosnippetExcludes marked parts of a page from snippetsOnly works on the sections you mark
max-snippet:[number]Limits snippet lengthShorter snippets in normal results too
noindexRemoves the page from Google SearchNo organic visibility at all

What about Google-Extended?

Google-Extended is a robots.txt token that controls whether content is used to train Gemini models and for grounding in some Google products. Google says it doesn’t affect a site’s inclusion in Google Search and isn’t a ranking signal. It isn’t a way to leave AI Overviews.

When it might make sense

  • Content you don’t want summarized at all, such as paid or licensed material.
  • Specific sections, such as pricing details, you’d rather users read in context (data-nosnippet).
  • Pages that shouldn’t be in Search at all (noindex).

For most business sites, appearing as a cited source is more useful than opting out. See how to make content easier to cite.

How to implement

  • Page level: a robots meta tag such as <meta name="robots" content="nosnippet">.
  • Section level: add the data-nosnippet attribute to span, div or section elements.
  • Non-HTML files: use the X-Robots-Tag HTTP header.

Frequently asked questions

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?
