What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization)? A Plain-English Guide
What people mean by AEO, what’s genuinely new about it, and what’s simply good SEO under a new name.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so that systems which answer questions directly, such as Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, featured snippets, voice assistants and chat-based search tools, can understand it and use it in their answers.
The term is popular with agencies, and it’s easy to oversell. Google’s own documentation says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed to appear in its AI features. So AEO is best understood as a focus within SEO: answering real questions clearly, on pages that are already indexable and trustworthy.
Short answer: AEO (answer engine optimization) means making your content easy for answer-giving systems, such as Google AI Overviews, featured snippets, voice assistants and AI chat search, to understand and cite. In practice it builds on SEO: indexable pages, clear direct answers to real questions, well-organized sections, accurate structured data and visible expertise. Google says no special markup or files are required for its AI features.
Key Takeaways
- AEO focuses on answering specific questions clearly enough to be used in an answer.
- It isn’t a separate discipline from SEO: content must be crawlable, indexable and trusted first.
- Google says its AI features need no special markup, files or optimizations beyond normal SEO.
- Clear question-led headings, direct answers and supporting detail help both readers and answer systems.
- No one can guarantee inclusion in an AI answer.
Where answers appear
| Surface | What it shows | Where content comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | An AI-generated summary with links, shown when Google judges it adds value | Indexed pages eligible for a snippet |
| Google AI Mode | Conversational answers for deeper and comparative questions | Indexed pages; Google uses multiple related searches (query fan-out) |
| Featured snippets | An extract from one page above the results | Indexed page content |
| ChatGPT search | Answers with linked sources | Pages its search crawler (OAI-SearchBot) can access |
| Perplexity | Answers with numbered citations | Pages indexed by PerplexityBot |
| Voice assistants | A spoken answer | Varies by assistant |
What’s actually different from SEO
Traditional SEO aims to rank a page for a query. AEO aims to have a specific passage or fact used inside an answer. The foundations are the same; the emphasis shifts. We cover the comparison in detail in AEO vs SEO.
- Questions, not just keywords: research the exact questions customers ask and answer each one directly.
- Passage-level clarity: an answer system may use one paragraph, so each section should make sense on its own.
- Entities and facts: names, numbers, definitions and relationships stated plainly and consistently across your site.
- Trust signals: clear authorship, sources and accurate information; Google says trust is the most important part of E-E-A-T.
What Google says about its AI features
Google’s guidance for site owners is notably short. To be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Beyond that, Google lists the same practices it recommends for Search in general:
- Allow crawling in robots.txt and in any CDN or hosting rules.
- Make content easy to find through internal links.
- Provide a good page experience.
- Keep important content in text form, supported by relevant images and video.
- Make sure structured data matches the visible text.
- Keep Merchant Center and Business Profile information up to date.
Google explicitly says no new machine-readable files, AI text files or special schema are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode.
Practical AEO steps
- List the questions your customers ask before buying (sales calls, support emails, Search Console queries, People Also Ask).
- Map each question to one page so you don’t compete with yourself.
- Put a direct, self-contained answer near the top of the relevant section, then the detail.
- Use descriptive, question-style headings where they match how people ask.
- Support claims with sources, data you can stand behind, and clear authorship.
- Add structured data that matches the page (Organization, Article, Product, LocalBusiness).
- Check the page is indexed and eligible for snippets in Search Console.

What AEO can’t do
No one can guarantee a citation in an AI answer. These systems choose sources per query, and Google says even pages that meet every requirement aren’t guaranteed to be shown.
AEO also can’t fix weak foundations. If pages aren’t indexed, the information is thin, or the site has little trust, rewriting headings into questions won’t change much. Treat AEO as one part of an SEO program, not a replacement.
Measuring AEO
Google reports clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside Search Console’s Performance report, under the Web search type, mixed with other results. Other platforms send referral traffic you can see in analytics. See how to measure AI search visibility.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO different from SEO?
It’s a focus within SEO rather than a separate discipline. Both need crawlable, indexable, trustworthy pages; AEO puts extra emphasis on clear answers to specific questions.
Do I need special schema for AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed, including no special schema.org markup.
Can an agency guarantee my content appears in AI answers?
No. These systems pick sources per query, and Google says inclusion isn’t guaranteed even when a page meets every requirement.
Does AEO work for local businesses?
Yes. Clear answers on service pages plus an accurate Google Business Profile help, and Google lists keeping Business Profile information current among its recommendations.
What’s the difference between AEO and GEO?
The terms overlap. AEO usually refers to answer surfaces in general, including featured snippets and voice; GEO refers specifically to generative AI answers.
