SEO Ranking Myths: Social Signals, Domain Age, Keyword Domains and Bounce Rate
A lot of SEO advice repeats things Google has never said. Here’s what its documentation does and doesn’t support.
Some ranking beliefs are hard to kill: that social shares push rankings, that old domains rank better, that a keyword in the domain is a shortcut, or that a high bounce rate gets you demoted.
Google’s SEO Starter Guide has a section of things not to focus on, and its ranking systems guide lists the systems it does use. Those two documents settle more of these debates than any forum thread.
Short answer: Google says keywords in a domain name have hardly any effect on rankings, that there’s no magic word count, that meta keywords aren’t used, and that the number and order of headings doesn’t matter for Search. Google’s ranking systems guide doesn’t list domain age, social shares or analytics bounce rate as signals, and Google can’t see your Analytics bounce rate. Focus on helpful content, crawlable pages and earning genuine links and mentions.
Key Takeaways
- Keyword domains: Google says hardly any effect.
- Word count: no magic number.
- Meta keywords: not used.
- Bounce rate is an analytics metric, not a documented ranking signal.
- Social and domain age help indirectly at most.
Myths and what Google has said
| Belief | What the documentation says |
|---|---|
| A keyword in the domain boosts rankings | Google’s starter guide says keywords in the domain name have hardly any effect. Its exact match domain system exists to stop weak sites riding on a keyword domain. |
| Longer content ranks better | Google says there’s no magic word count and that writing to a target length is a search-engine-first warning sign (helpful content). |
| Meta keywords help | Google says it doesn’t use the keywords meta tag. |
| You need a perfect H1-H6 order | Google says the number and order of headings doesn’t matter for Search, though logical headings help readers and accessibility. |
| Subdomains vs subfolders changes rankings | Google calls this a business decision. |
| Duplicate content gets penalized | Google says duplicate content isn’t a manual action; it’s a canonicalization issue (duplicate content). |
| E-E-A-T is a ranking factor | Google says E-E-A-T itself isn’t a specific ranking factor (E-E-A-T). |
Social media and SEO
Google’s ranking systems guide doesn’t list likes, shares or follower counts as signals. That doesn’t make social useless: it gets content in front of people who may link to it, mention your brand or search for you by name later. Treat social as distribution, not a ranking lever.
Your social profiles can also help Google and AI systems connect your business entity across the web (entity SEO).
Domain age
Google doesn’t document domain age as a ranking signal. Older domains often rank well because they’ve had years to earn links, content and reputation, not because of the registration date. Buying an old domain to exploit its history can cross into Google’s expired domain abuse policy.
Bounce rate and engagement
Bounce rate is a Google Analytics metric, and GA4 now defines it as the opposite of engagement rate. Google Search doesn’t use your Analytics account, and its documentation doesn’t list bounce rate as a ranking signal. A high bounce rate can be normal: someone who finds a phone number and calls has bounced but converted.
Use engagement metrics to improve pages for people, and judge SEO by Search Console clicks, queries and conversions (SEO KPIs).
What to focus on instead
- Helpful, original content that answers what searchers want (search intent).
- Crawlable, indexable pages (technical checklist).
- Clear titles, headings and internal links.
- Links and mentions earned on merit (link building rules).
- A fast, usable site on mobile.
Frequently asked questions
Does posting on social media help SEO?
Not directly as a documented ranking signal, but it can lead to links, mentions and branded searches.
Should I buy an exact match domain?
Google says keywords in domains have hardly any effect. Choose a memorable brand name instead.
Does a high bounce rate hurt rankings?
Google doesn’t document it as a signal and doesn’t use your Analytics data. Look at whether the page meets the visitor’s need.
Does publishing more often help?
Frequency itself isn’t a documented signal. Publish when you have something useful; see editorial planning.
