Google Business Profile Optimization Checklist (Based on Google’s Own Guidance)

Every item Google mentions for a complete, accurate profile, in the order we’d tackle them.

Most Business Profile “optimization” comes down to two things Google states plainly: verify the business, and keep its information complete, accurate and current. Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local search results.

Use this checklist for a new profile or an audit of an existing one. Items marked as rules come from Google’s guidelines; breaking them can lead to suspension.

Short answer: To optimize a Google Business Profile: verify it; use your real-world business name with no added keywords; choose the most specific primary category; set an accurate address or service area; add regular and special hours, services, attributes, photos and a description; ask every customer for reviews and reply to them; and keep everything current. Google says complete, accurate profiles are more likely to show up.

Key Takeaways

  • Verify first: Google says only verified businesses show their information on Maps and Search.
  • Your business name must match your real-world name, with no keywords, locations or taglines.
  • Pick the fewest, most specific categories that describe what your business is.
  • Complete every relevant field: hours, special hours, services, attributes, photos.
  • Replying to reviews is one of Google’s own tips; buying or gating reviews breaks its rules.

1. Ownership and verification

  • Sign in with a Google Account the business controls, not a personal account of a former employee or agency.
  • Verify the profile using the method Google offers; Google chooses the method, and reviews can take up to 5 business days.
  • Add agencies or staff as managers rather than sharing the owner login.
  • If you also verify your website in Search Console, Google says some profiles can be verified instantly.

2. Business name (rule)

Use your real-world business name, as shown on your signage, website and stationery. Google’s guidelines don’t allow taglines, keywords, locations or codes in the name, and adding them is a common reason for suspension.

3. Categories

  • Choose the primary category that describes what your business is, not everything it sells.
  • Use as few additional categories as possible, and only accurate ones.
  • Compare the categories used by the businesses that appear for your main searches.

4. Address or service area (rule)

  • Show a street address only if customers visit you there or staff are present during hours.
  • Don’t use PO boxes or virtual offices; Google’s guidelines don’t allow them.
  • Service-area businesses should hide the address and set a service area; Google says it shouldn’t extend beyond about two hours’ drive from your base.
  • Use one profile per location; don’t create duplicates.

5. Hours

  • Set regular opening hours.
  • Add special hours for public holidays and closures; Google lists these among its tips.
  • Mark the business temporarily closed rather than deleting it if you pause trading.

6. Contact details and website

  • Use a phone number that reaches the business directly.
  • Link to the most relevant page: your homepage, or the location page for multi-location businesses.
  • Make sure name, address and phone match your website exactly.

7. Services, attributes and description

  • List the services you actually provide, in your customers’ words.
  • Add attributes that apply, such as accessibility, parking or payment options.
  • Write a plain description of what you do and for whom; Google’s guidelines don’t allow links or promotional offers in it.

8. Photos and videos

Google suggests adding photos and videos that show what you offer. Prioritize a clear logo and cover image, the exterior (so people can find you), the interior, your team and real examples of your work. Use genuine photos, not stock images.

9. Reviews

  • Ask every customer for a review, using the review link from your profile.
  • Reply to reviews, positive and negative; Google says replies show you value feedback.
  • Never pay for reviews, offer incentives, or only ask customers you expect to be happy.

See how to get more Google reviews within the rules.

10. Products (retail)

Google says retail businesses in eligible countries can show in-store products on their profile, which can then appear in local results.

11. Upkeep

  • Review the profile monthly; check for edits suggested by users or Google.
  • Update hours, services and photos when anything changes.
  • Watch the performance report: searches, calls, direction requests and website clicks.
  • Remember edits can take up to 3 days to show, and major changes can trigger re-verification.

Google says there’s no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. A complete, accurate, verified profile is the part you control.
