Shopify Merchant Center Troubleshooting: Common Problems and Fixes
The problems Shopify stores run into with the Google & YouTube app and Merchant Center, why they happen, and where to fix each one.
Most Shopify stores send products to Merchant Center through the Google & YouTube app. The app handles the connection, website claim and product sync, which makes setup quick. It also means some problems only make sense once you know which system owns which setting.
This guide assumes your store is already connected. If you’re still setting things up, start with how to connect Shopify to Merchant Center. Here we cover what goes wrong afterwards, and finish with a Shopify-specific checklist you can run before and after any change.
Short answer: Most Shopify Merchant Center problems come from a domain claim that doesn’t match your product URLs, shipping rates from third-party apps that don’t import, app syncs overwriting edits made in Merchant Center, and missing return policy or contact details on the store. Fix product data in Shopify, fix account settings in Merchant Center, then request a re-review from the app if needed.
Key Takeaways
- Edit product data in Shopify, not in Merchant Center: the app sync can overwrite manual Merchant Center edits.
- If the claimed domain doesn’t match your product URLs, change the online store URL in Merchant Center and claim it again.
- Rates from third-party shipping-rate apps can’t be imported; set those up manually in Merchant Center.
- A clear return policy and full contact details on the store are common requirements behind warnings.
- Discount codes are promotions, not sale prices; use sale prices only for discounts shown to every shopper.
Who owns what: Shopify, the app and Merchant Center
The Google & YouTube app is installed from the Shopify App Store and links Merchant Center, Google Ads, Google Analytics, conversion tracking, YouTube and Business Profile. Products sync automatically, or you can trigger a sync manually.
Troubleshooting gets easier when you know where each piece of data is controlled:
| Data or setting | Usually controlled in | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Titles, descriptions, prices, images, variants, stock | Shopify product admin | Synced to Merchant Center by the app |
| Online store URL and website claim | App during setup; Merchant Center business info afterwards | Can mismatch when you use several domains |
| Shipping rates | Shopify, synced by the app | Third-party shipping-rate app rates can’t be imported |
| Return policies (structured) | Merchant Center Shipping and returns | Must match the policy page on your store |
| Business name, address, customer service | Merchant Center business info | Must match what the store shows |
| Warnings and re-review requests | App Overview and Settings; Merchant Center Needs attention | Both show the same issues |
Google notes that updates from an API or third-party platform such as Shopify may overwrite manual edits made in Merchant Center. If a fix keeps reverting, the value is still wrong in Shopify. See Google’s shipping settings help for the same warning on shipping.
Common Shopify problems at a glance
These are the issues Shopify stores run into most often, roughly in order of how often they come up in practice.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Where to fix |
|---|---|---|
| Products disapproved or website not claimed after setup | Claimed domain differs from the domain in product URLs | Merchant Center Settings > Business info |
| Missing shipping information | Rates come from a third-party shipping-rate app | Merchant Center Shipping and returns |
| Edits in Merchant Center keep reverting | App sync overwrites manual edits | Shopify product admin |
| Account warning or suspension | Missing return policy, thin contact info, misrepresentation | Store pages, then Merchant Center business info |
| Price mismatch on discounted products | Discount shown only with a code, or strikethrough price differs from data | Shopify pricing and theme |
| Missing identifiers | Barcode field empty or holding internal codes | Shopify product or variant barcode field |
| Availability mismatch | Stock changes between syncs, or variant stock shown differently on the page | Shopify inventory and theme |
Each row is covered below. For the general fix process behind price errors, see how to fix price mismatches.
Domain claim doesn’t match your product URLs
If your store uses several domains, redirects or vanity URLs, the app verifies and claims a site automatically, and the domain it claims may not be the one in your product URLs. Google says this can cause product approval issues.
Google’s documented fix:
- In Merchant Center, go to Settings > Business info and edit the online store.
- Enter the domain used in your product URLs. It must be one of the domains listed in Shopify under Settings > Domains.
- Save, then select Change and Claim.
- Let products sync again, automatically or with a manual sync from the app.
Verification problems
Google’s URL verification guide notes that Google Analytics verification may not work on third-party platforms like Shopify; use the HTML tag method instead. If verification keeps failing, removing “www” from the URL may help.
A URL can be claimed by only one Merchant Center account. If an old account (from a previous agency, a test setup or a former owner) still holds the claim, it has to be released there first, or both accounts need to sit under a Multi-Client Account, whose sub-accounts inherit the claim.
Shipping rates that don’t come across
Rates calculated by third-party shipping-rate apps in Shopify can’t be imported into Merchant Center. Google says to set them up manually in Merchant Center under Shipping and returns. The full process is in how to configure shipping settings.
- Keep Merchant Center costs as close as possible to what checkout charges. If you can’t match exactly, Google recommends overestimating.
- The shipping currency must match the product price currency, or items can be disapproved.
- If several shipping options exist for the same country, Google shows the lowest cost (and the fastest speed if costs tie). Make sure the cheapest option is real.
- Item-level shipping values override account settings for that location, so check whether the app sends any.
If products already show a shipping issue, see how to fix missing shipping information.
Edits that keep reverting after a sync
When the app is your data source, Shopify is the source of truth. A title or price edited directly in Merchant Center can be overwritten on the next sync, and the issue comes back.
- Make the change in Shopify (product, variant, barcode, inventory or theme).
- Sync from the app or wait for the automatic sync.
- Check the product in Merchant Center under Products to confirm the new value arrived.
- Only then request a website check or review if the issue offers one.
For values Shopify can’t hold, a supplemental data source or attribute rules can add or change attributes on top of the app’s data. Both depend on the Advanced data source management add-on in many setups. See supplemental feeds.
Suggested attribute values accepted in Needs attention override later changes from other methods. If you accepted one by mistake, you can view and revert it from the product’s Edit product screen.
Return policy and contact information on your store
Google’s article for Shopify app users lists the most common reasons for warnings and suspensions: a missing return and refund policy, insufficient contact information, and misrepresentation.
Return policy
Publish a return and refund policy page on your store and link it from the footer. State it clearly even if you don’t accept returns. Then set up the matching policy in Merchant Center under Shipping and returns > Return policies.
Google’s return policy requirements say the policy must be clear and conspicuous, cover general cases such as buyer’s remorse (not only defects), be readable without logging in, and state the time frame, method and fees. It must be consistent across Merchant Center, the returns page, the footer and any banners. More detail is in how to fix missing return policy information.
Contact information
Google expects contact details such as your legal business name, physical address, phone number and email, consistent with what you entered in Merchant Center. A contact form and social links can add to this but don’t replace it.
- Check that the business name and address in Merchant Center business info match the store.
- Remove leftover theme placeholder text and fix broken links in menus and the footer.
- Link your shipping, refund and privacy policies from every page.
- Test checkout end to end on HTTPS.
Discount codes vs sale prices
Shopify makes it easy to run discount codes and compare-at prices. Google treats them differently. According to the sale price specification, discounts that need a promo code are promotions, not sale_price.
| Discount type | How Google treats it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Price reduced for every shopper, shown with a strikethrough | Sale price: submit full price plus sale_price | Page shows both prices; checkout charges the sale price; the strikethrough matches price |
| Discount only with a code | A promotion, not a sale price | Keep the regular price in your product data |
| Member or loyalty price | Not a sale price | Use the loyalty program attribute instead |
If a discount is live on the site but the product data still carries the old price, Google says to submit the sale price as the price. Mismatches here are a common cause of price disapprovals on Shopify. Our guide to sale prices in product feeds covers dates and time zones.
If your theme or a currency or pricing app changes the displayed price with JavaScript after the page loads, Googlebot may read a different price from the HTML. Google says the HTML price must match exactly.
Warnings, suspensions and the re-review flow
When Google finds a violation, it emails a warning describing the issue, how to fix it and the timeframe. The warning also shows in the app’s Overview and in Merchant Center under Products > Needs attention. During the warning, products may keep showing with limited visibility.
- If you remove the violating products during the warning, no review is needed; Google reviews automatically at the end.
- If the warning period ends without a fix, the account may be suspended, and you then request a re-review.
- Egregious issues can lead to immediate suspension without a warning.
Requesting a re-review from Shopify
- Examine the store and account thoroughly first: product details, business information, policies and contact info.
- In Shopify, go to Sales channels > Google & YouTube > Settings > Request re-review and complete the form.
- Complete identity verification if asked, with high-quality documents that match the account data.
- Wait for the result. Google’s Shopify article says reviews typically take 3 to 7 business days.
You can also request a review in Merchant Center (from Home, an issue banner, the Needs attention card or the Diagnostics tab). For app support, use the three-dot menu and Get support.
Reviews are limited. After repeated unsuccessful requests the button is disabled for a cool-down that gets longer each time, and the end date shows under Products > Needs attention > View setup and Policy issues. See how to prepare for a review before you submit.
Shopify Merchant Center checklist
Run this after setup, after a theme change, after installing pricing, currency or shipping apps, and before any review request.
Connection and website
- The claimed domain in Merchant Center matches the domain in product URLs.
- That domain is listed in Shopify under Settings > Domains.
- Only one Merchant Center account claims the store URL.
- Products are syncing (check the last sync in the app and product counts in Merchant Center).
Store pages
- Return and refund policy published, linked in the footer, readable without login.
- Contact page with business name, physical address, phone and email.
- Shipping and privacy policies linked from every page.
- No placeholder text, broken links or unfinished pages.
- Checkout works end to end on HTTPS with a conventional payment method.
Merchant Center settings
- Business name, address and customer service details match the store.
- Shipping policies cover every target country, including rates from shipping-rate apps.
- Return policy set up and consistent with the store page.
Product data
- Barcodes hold real GTINs, or are empty when none exists.
- Discounts shown to everyone appear as a strikethrough on the page and as price plus sale_price in the data; code-only discounts don’t.
- Prices are in the HTML when the page loads, not only added by script.
- Each variant has its own image and correct stock.
- Needs attention reviewed with Prioritized fixes switched off.
When to get help
Most Shopify issues can be fixed in-house once you know where the data comes from. Outside help makes sense when a domain or claim problem won’t resolve, when issues return after every sync, or when a warning or suspension is already in place and you have limited review attempts left.
Our Shopify SEO service covers store and product data issues that affect Merchant Center. Google makes every review decision, and we have no special access to Google support.
